In this collection, there is a total of 28,698 unique
texts in 53 different languages. Because many
texts have been set by different composers, that translates to a total
of 45,138 Lieder and other vocal pieces (more
specifically: Kunstlieder, mélodies, romansy, and other art
songs and classical vocal pieces).
The texts are all displayed in ISO Latin 1 (an extension of
ASCII that allows characters such as ß, ø, å and
é) with some Unicode characters for Czech, Hungarian, Polish,
Romanian and Turkish. The Russian texts are strictly transliterated
into ASCII, but each has a link to convert it to Unicode
Cyrillic. Note that names of Russian poets and composers are less
constrained; for example, rather than "Chajkovskij", the more familiar
North-American-style "Tchaikovsky" is used.
Beneath some languages there is a link to a list of texts that have
been translated to that language. All translations are included in
these lists, both setting-texts and volunteer translations.
Please note: If you notice a song whose language is labelled incorrectly,
please let me know. I may have mixed up some Danish and Norwegian
texts.
