Zły Lejba
Language:
Polish
Ach Lejbo, Lejbo, jakże ci nie wstyd?
Zawsześ my mówiły, żeś ty dobry żyd.
Kupowałyśmy śledzie u ciebie i bułki,
nie śmiałyśmy się nigdy z twojej jarmułki.
Zła była twoja waga;
Patrz, Lalka taka mała, a wszystko zrozumiała,
a już ci dzisiaj ręki na dzieńdobry nie podała.
Ach, Lejbo, Lejbo, jakże ci nie wstyd?
Zawsześ my mówiły, żeś ty dobry żyd!
Bardzo nam przykro, lecz nie nasza wina,
Idziemy stąd na skargę prosto do rabina.
Mamy złą i dobrą miarkę i nasze ziarnka,
a prócz tego Lalka niesie także i kanarka.

Crafty Leiba
Language:
English
Oh, Leiba, aren't you ashamed?
We've always said you're an honest Jew.
We've bought herrings from you, and bread rolls,
we've never laughed at your funny skull-cap.
But your weights are wrong;
your measures aren't true!
You've cheated us, Leiba, with the bird-seed.
Look at you, Leiba, now in front of us:
Blushing, coughing, blinking your eyes.
Look, even a little doll can catch it all
and hasn't said "Good morning" to you today.
Oh, Leiba, aren't you ashamed of yourself?
We've always said you were on honest Jew!
We are very sorry, but it's not our fault,
We'll take our complaint straight to the rabbi.
We've got good and bad measures of the bird-seed
and the Doily is with us, carefully carrying the canary.
