Je me reposais, assis tranquillement
Et je voyais les rouages,
Et je regardais les eaux.

Je regardais la scie luisante,
Comme en rêve,
Se frayer un long chemin
Dans un sapin.

Le sapin semblait être en vie,
Tremblant de toutes ses fibres,
Sur une triste mélodie,
Il chantait ces paroles :

Tu es arrivé ici à l'heure,
Ô voyageur,
Tu es celui pour qui cette blessure
Me pénètre le cœur !

Tu es celui pour qui,
Peu après la fin de ton voyage,
Ce bois, au sein de la terre,
Deviendra la châsse d'un [long]1 repos.

Je vis tomber quatre planches
