Pretty Peg

Language: Scottish (Scots)

As I gaed up by yon gate-end,
When day was waxin' weary,
Wha did I meet come down the street,
But pretty Peg, my dearie!

Her air sae sweet, an' shape complete,
Wi' nae proportion wanting,
The Queen of Love did never move
Wi' motion mair enchanting.

Wi' linked hands we took the sands,
Adown yon winding river;
Oh, that sweet hour and shady bower,
Forget it shall I never!

Gentle Reminder
This is a personal project that I began in 1995. I receive no salary for my full-time work on it, and aside from ad revenue and copyright fees, the Archive was supported financially last year by fewer than 0.02% of our visitors. Die holde Peg

Language: German (Deutsch)

Als ich ging ein, zum Thor herein,
  Im Abendsonnengolde,
Wer trippelt da die Straß herab?
  Ei Peg, die liebe holde!

So frisch und blank, so nett und schlank,
  War nichts dran zu vermissen;
Käm' Venus her, sie hätte mehr
  Mein Herz nicht hingerissen.

So Hand in Hand am Uferfand
  Ging's fort im Abendschimmer:
Die sel'ge Stund' im Thalesgrund
  Vergess' ich nun und nimmer!
