Frühlingsgesang

Language: German (Deutsch)

Schmücket die Locken mit duftigen Kränzen
Und folget der Freude beglückendem Drang,
Begrüßet den Frühling mit heiteren Tänzen,
Den Sieger, der Alles in Liebe bezwang.

Der Winter bedroht ihn mit schauriger Kälte,
Der Sommer verfolgt ihn mit flammendem Speer,
Aber er schwebt [unterm blauen]1 Gezelte
Sorglos und lächelnd auf Düften daher.

        Und die treue Erde
        Mit Liebes-Geberde
            Eilt ihm entgegen,
            Es heben und regen
Sich tausend Kräfte in ihrer Brust,
Und künden der Liebe selige Lust.

        Es rieseln die Quellen
        Und Knospen schwellen,
            Blumen erscheinen

F. Schubert sets stanzas 1-3, 5 in (at least) one setting - see below for more information

View original text (without footnotes)

Confirmed with Gedichte von Franz von Schober, Stuttgart und Tübingen, J. G. Cotta'scher Verlag, 1842, page 10.

Spelling variants: "Liebes-Geberde" is sometimes spelled "Liebesgebärde" or "Liebesgeberde"
1 Schubert (both versions): "unter blauem"
2 note: there is a typo in the edition we checked; this is "Wenn" in the edition, and hand-corrected to "Wem", which appears in later editions (cf. an 1868 edition of Deutsche Lyriker seit 1850 available in Google Books). "Wenn" appears erroneously in the 1891 score of Schubert's D. 709.
3 Schubert (both versions): "heiteren"

L'hiver le menace avec un froid horrible ;
