Io sono grato a Dio e mi rallegro
come a Natale un piccolo bimbetto,
perché qui sono, e perché possiedo
un volto umano e di bell'aspetto.
Perché posso vedere il sole, i monti e il mare
e foglie ed erba nel loro splendore
perché tutte le sere posso camminare
sotto le stelle o della luna al chiarore.
Ringrazio Dio con musica di corde,
perché un sovrano non sono diventato;
mi avrebbe adulato tutta la corte
e questo forse mi avrebbe depravato.
Possa ogni giorno concedermi il Signore
solo quanto per la vita è di alimento,
come con il passero sul tetto suole fare;
riservi a me lo stesso trattamento!
