My bonnie Mary (Closely imitating Burns and Freiligrath)

Language: English

Go fetch a flask of sparkling wine
And pour it in a crystal glassie
I'll drink a health before I go,
A health to thee, my bonnie lassie.

The boat is tossing in the bay,
Loud blows the stormy wind and cheery
The ship rides proudly on the main,
And I must leave thee, bonnie Mary.

Shrill sounds the clarion, banners wave,
Each patriot heart beats high for glory,
The battle cry is hard on high,
The combat rages fierce and gory.

Not oceans roar, nor tempest's pow'r
It is that makes my heart so eerie,
Not battles might, nor bloody fight,
It is, that I must leave thee, Mary,
it is, that I must leave thee Mary.

The white sails fill and soon the ship
will waft me to my comrades over.
But through the din of battle grim
Thy image pure shall light thy lover,
The storm may rage, the ocean swell,

I fear not them, nor foe-man wary.
His death-pang shall a witness be,
That I was forc'd to leave, thee Mary,
That I was forc'd to leave thee, Mary.
That I was forc'd to leave my bonnie Mary.
