O Haideland, wie bist du stille
Und doch voll Droh'n,
In deiner braunen Flechtenhülle
Am Tage schon.

Nun erst, wann dir die Dümmer weben
Den Nebel vor
Und keine Vögel mehr entschweben
Dem wilden Moor!

Wie muß es weh'n in deinen Gründen
So schaurig hohl,
Den Weg aus dir zurückzusinden
Verzagt' ich wohl.

Du trägst das Bild von einem Meere
In deinem Schooß,
Nur läßt dir nicht die Erdenschwere
Die Wildheit los.

Doch glaub' ich, wann die Stürme blasen,
Geschieht es doch,
Daß du im Grimm des Meeres Rasen
Besiegest noch.
