Von Spanien kam die Kunde, wie jener Held von Stahl,
Roland, gefället worden im Thal von Roncesval.

Da nahm den frommen Schleier die schöne Hildegund,
Gelobte Gott die Seele mit todesbleichem Mund.

Doch bald viel andre Kunde sandt' aus der grüne Rhein:
Kein Schwert könnt ihn besiegen, die Liebe nur allein!

Es ward die schärfste Lanze ihm durch das Herz gerannt,
Als Hildegund, die Schöne, er Gott vermählet fand!

Auf hohem Felsen thät er sich eine Klause bau'n.
Von da zu ihrem Kloster im Rhein herabzuschaun.

Da scholl von grüner Insel der Nonnensang empor:
Die holde Stimme wähnt' er zu hören aus dem Chor.

Wie Blumenseim die Biene sog er den süßen Schmerz,
Bis Minne ihm gebrochen das tapfere Heldenherz.
