Maid of Athens, ere we part

Language: English

Maid of Athens, ere we part,
Give, oh give me back my heart!
Or, since that has left my breast,
Keep it now, and take the rest!
Hear my vow before I go,
Ζωή μου, σᾶς ἀγαπῶ.

By those tresses unconfined,
Woo'd by each Ægean wind;
By those lids whose jetty fringe
Kiss thy soft cheeks' blooming tinge;
By those wild eyes like the roe,
Ζωή μου, σᾶς ἀγαπῶ.

By that lip I long to taste;
By that zone-encircled waist;
By all the token-flowers that tell
What words can never speak so well;
By love's alternate joy and woe,
Ζωή μου, σᾶς ἀγαπῶ.

Maid of Athens! I am gone:
Think of me, sweet! when alone.
Though I fly to Istambol,
Athens holds my heart and soul:
Can I cease to love thee? No!
Ζωή μου, σᾶς ἀγαπῶ.

Note: Byron translated the Greek refrain as "My life, I love thee."

Maid Athens

Language: German

Maid Athens, beim Trennungschmerz
Gib, o gib zurück mein Herz,
Oder seit mir's aus 'rem Sinn,
Nimm noch alles Andre hin,
Eh' ich scheide, hör' mich so:
Ζωή μου, σᾶς ἀγαπῶ.

Bei den Locken, ungezwängt,
Von Aegeas Wind umdrängt,
Bei den Wimpern, deren Nacht
Küßt der Rosenwange Pracht,
Bei den Augen, licht und loh:
Ζωή μου, σᾶς ἀγαπῶ.

Bei dem kußgeformten Wund,
Bei dem Wuchse, schlank und rund,
Bei der Blumensprache Kraft,
Was kein Wort so spricht und schafft,
Bei der Liebe, band und froh:
Ζωή μου, σᾶς ἀγαπῶ.

Maid Athens gedenke mein,
Wenn ich fern und du allein;
Ob ich nach Vyzanz gereist,
Hält Athen doch Herz und Geist.
Von dir laffen? - Nirgendwo!
Ζωή μου, σᾶς ἀγαπῶ.
