Der tote Müller

Die Sterne überm Tale stehn,
Das Mühlrad nur man [höret]1,
Zum kranken Müller muß ich gehn,
Er hat den Freund [begehret]2.

Ich steig' hinab den Felsenstein,
Es donnert dumpf die Mühle,
Und eine Glocke tönt darein:
"Die Arbeit ist am Ziele!"

In Müllers Kammer tret' ich [nun]3:
Starr liegt das Greisen Hülle. 
Es stockt sein Herz, die Pulse ruhn,
Und draußen auch wird's stille.

Die treuen Lieben weinen sehr,
Still bleibt sein Herz und kühle;
Die Wasser fließen wohl daher,
Still aber steht die Mühle.

La Mort du Meunier

La lune éclaire la vallée. 
On me dit qu'il attend. 
Il va mourir, le vieux meunier. 
Arriverai-je à temps?

Je monte le chemin rocheux. 
Au loin la cloche sonne. 
Que le chant du moulin joyeux
Me semble monotone!

Trop tard! Il repose serein. 
Le douleur me désarme,
J'incline mon front sur sa main,
La baignant de mes larmes.

Si toujour gaiement sous les feuilles
Le ruisseau suit sa pente,
Le vieux moulin porte le deuil
Et plus jamais ne chante . . .
