Wie der Mond sich leuchtend dränget
Language:

Wie der Mond sich leuchtend dränget
Durch den dunkeln Wolkenflor,
Also taucht aus dunkeln Zeiten
Mir ein lichtes Bild hervor.
Saßen all auf dem Verdecke,
Fuhren stolz hinab den Rhein,
Und die sommergrünen Ufer
Glühn im Abendsonnenschein.
Sinnend saß ich zu den Füßen
Einer Dame, schön und hold;
In ihr liebes bleiches Antlitz
Spielt' das rote Sonnengold.
Lauten klangen, Buben sangen,
Wunderbare Fröhlichkeit!
Und der Himmel wurde blauer,
Und die Seele wurde weit.
Märchenhaft vorüberzogen
Berg und Burgen, Wald und Au; -
Und das alles sah ich glänzen
In dem Aug der schönen Frau.

As the moon with splendor pierces
Language:
English
As the moon with splendor pierces
Through the dark cloud-veil of night,
From my darksome Past emerges
Once again a dream of light.
All upon the deck were seated,
Proudly smiling down the Rhine.
Green with June the shores were glowing
In the evening's sunset-shine.
At the feet of a fair lady
Sat I, full of thoughts untold,
O'er her pale and lovely features
Played the sunlight's ruddy gold.
Lutes were ringing, boys were singing,
Wondrous joy on stream and shore,
Blue and bluer grew the heavens,
And the spirit seemd to sour.
Hill and city, wood and meadow,
Glided past in fairy-wise,
And I saw the whole scene mirrored
In the lovely lady's eyes.
