Traumsommernacht

Language: German

Sommernacht, Traumsommernacht!
Die Brunnen rauschen leise,
die Trauerweide wiegt sich sacht;
nun steigt der Mond in voller Pracht
empor zur Wolkenreise.

Traum und Frieden.  Was hienieden
unruhvoll das Herz verstört,
senkt sich in des Traumes Tiefen.
Und der Ruhe Geigentöne
die in Tages Lärme schwiegen,

In der heißen Helle schliefen,
seelentiefe, seelenschöne,
kommen nun heraufgestiegen,
werden nun gehört.

Sommernacht, Traumsommernacht!
Ein Rauschen lieb und leise,
die Seele wiegt sich süß und sacht
nach ihrer Geigenweise

Traum und Frieden . . . . hingeschieden
alles was uns traurig macht.
Sterne glimmen, Wolken schwimmen,
und das Märchen ist erwacht.

Summer night, Dream summer night!

Language: English

Summer night, Dream summer night!
The brooklets babble softly,
the weeping willow cradles light;
now doth the moon so dazzling bright
begin her lofty journey.

Dreamy stillness. Weariness
that on earth the heart torment,
sink into the land of dreaming,
and of Peace the gentle murm'rings
which in ban the day was keeping,

in the heat of haste were sleeping,
heav'nly tender, sweet and stirring,
sing out now into the gleaming;
Sing of Rest, Content.

Summer night, Dream summer night!
'Tis rustling round us softly,
the soul is cradled low and light
to strains so sweet and lovely:

Dreamy stillness . . . . gone all sadness
that the heart so heavy makes.
Stars, they glimmer, clouds they shimmer,
and the fairytale awakes.
