C'était un matin de ce mois de mai,
Et par les chemins je t'avais suivie.
Le printemps était vert et parfumé,
Et je saluais la terre et la vie.

Or ton pied laissait un sillon de feu,

Le rose orient s'était enflammé,
La forèt chantait comme une berceuse,
Le printemps était vert et parfumé!
Lente tu marchais, ò ma paresseuse......

Aube de bonheur, dans mon jeune cœur
Se levait l'amour nouvelle et ravie ;
Ton sourire doux n'était point moqueur,
Et je saluais la terre  et la vie.
