Im Hochgebirg um die Mitternacht
Hat der Mörder den Wandrer umgebracht!
Den Leib, den wirft er zur tiefsten Schlucht
Und wendet sich feige zu jäher Flucht!
Doch des Opfers letzter, ersterbender Ton,
Er fand zu dem Ohre des Rächers sich schon.
Er hat den alten Berggeist erweckt,
Der hat zur Rache die Hand gereckt.
Kaum erreicht der Frevler den Teufelstein,
Da heult schon die Windsbraut hinter ihm drein.
Da donnert's, da fährt die Lawine herab,
Und reisst ihn rücklings in's eisige Grab!
