Egész kicsiny valék hogy megahlt jó anyám.
Oly fényes volt az ég zöld május alkonyán!
Sok asszony, ifju,vén jött, nézte s hallgatott.
Ugy vágytam sirni én, de féltem, kikapok.
Egy néni ölbe vett: "Jól nézd meg, gyermekem!"
S keserves könnyeket hullajtott csendesen.
"Jól megnézd mostan t, mert holnap elviszik;
mert édes jószül d többet sosem lesz itt."
Oh, rég volt, szörnyu rég!
Zöld május alkonyán
Olyan fényes volt az ég!
És oly halovány!
