Den Linden ist zu Füßen tief
Das dürre Laub geblieben;
Am Himmel steht ein Scheidebrief
Ins Abendrot geschrieben.
Die Wasser glänzen still und kühl,
Ein Jahr ist drin ertrunken;
Mir ist ein schaudernd Grabgefühl
Ins warme Herz gesunken.
Du schöne Welt! muß wohl ich bald
In diese Blätter sinken,
Daß andres Herz und andrer Wald
Die Frühlingslüfte trinken?
Wenn du für meines Wesens Raum
Ein bessres weißt zu finden,
Dann laß mich aus dem Lebenstraum
Rasch und auf ewig schwinden!
