Mia giovinezza di duol vestia:
donna vaghissima fu mia consorte,
fu per due lustri la fida mia.
Io l'adorava, ma un triste dì
Ella fuggì. Ah!
La macchia a tergere dell'onta infame
Il mio pugnal brandito, io corso...
E la rinvenni su poco strame
Egra, vivendo dei suoi rimorsi.
Ella acutissimo grido mandò,
E il mio pugnale al suol piombò.
Dio la puniva! Passar due mesi,
E udendo funereo suon di campane
D'ignota donna da un crocchio appresi
Che una pentita alma cristiana
Fra inenarrabile cupo dolor
Volava al gaudio del suo Signor...
Era la morta donna mia!
Della mia vita cielo ed inferno,
Che illacrimata dal mondo uscia
Rendendo orribile affanno eterno
A chi donato le aveva il cor.
