La tombe dit à la rose :
-- Des pleurs dont l'aube t'arrose
Que fais-tu, fleur des amours ?
La rose dit à la tombe :
-- Que fais-tu de ce qui tombe
Dans ton gouffre ouvert toujours ?

La rose dit: -- Tombeau sombre,
De ces pleurs je fais dans l'ombre
Un parfum d'ambre et de miel.
La tombe dit: -- Fleur plaintive,
De chaque âme qui m'arrive
Je fais un ange du ciel.

Das Grab und die Rose

Das Grab, es sprach zur Rose:
aus dem Tau in deinem Schosse,
sag an, was machst du? Tu' mir's kund.
Die Rose, sia sprach zum Grabe:
Was wird aus der traurigen Habe,
die du birgst in deinem Schlund?

Doch hoere du, was ich sage:
Aus dem Tau, der mich netzte vor Tage,
einen koestlichen Duft mach' ich dann.
Da sprach das Grab: Aus den Saergen,
die meine Beute bergen,
steigen Engel zum Himmel empor.
