Der Schiffer fährt zu Land
Da hört er Glocken läuten,
Es ist ihm unbekannt,
Was soll der Klang bedeuten.
Am Lande wohnt die Braut,
Die Treu ihm zugeschworen,
Ihm sagt der Glocke Laut,
Daß er die Braut verloren.
Ob sie ein and'rer hat,
Geführt zum Traualtare,
Ob sie an Freiers statt
Der Tod geholt zur Bahre.
Wie auch der Bräutigam
Sich nenne, der's erworben,
Er fühlt's an seinem Gram,
Daß ihm das Glück gestorben.
Er sieht am Strand das Haus
Und schlägt die Augen nieder,
Er fährt auf's Meer hinaus
Und kehrt zu Land nicht wieder.
