na knigu padajut vlasy.
Nad kolybeliju pustoj
jevrejka plachet molodaja.
Sidit v drugom uglu, glavoj
poniknuv, molodoj jevrej,
gluboko v dumu pogruzhjonnyj.
V pechal'noj khizhine starushka
Gotovit pozdnjuju trapezu.
Starik, zakryv svjatuju knigu,
Zastjozhki mednyje somknul.
Starukha stavit bednyj uzhin
Na stol i vsju sem'ju zovjot.
Nikto nejdjot, zabyv o pishche.
Tekut v bezmolvin chasy.
Usnulo vsjo pod sen'ju nochi.
Jevrejskoj khizhiny odnoj
Ne posetil otradnyj son.
Na kolokol'ne gorodskoj
b'jot polnoch'. -- Vdrug rukoj tjazhjoloj
stuchatsja k nim. Sem'ja vzdrognula,
mladoj jevrej vstajot i dver'
S nedoumen'jem otvorjajet --
I vkhodit neznakomyj strannik.
V jego ruke dorozhnyj posokh...
