Pace non trovo, et non ò da far guerra

Language: Italian (Italiano)

Pace non trovo, et non ò da far guerra;
e temo, et spero; et ardo, et son un ghiaccio;
et volo sopra 'l cielo, et giaccio in terra;
et nulla stringo, et tutto 'l mondo abbraccio.

Tal m'à in pregion, che non m'apre né serra,
né per suo mi riten né scioglie il laccio;
et non m'ancide Amore, et non mi sferra,
né mi vuol vivo, né mi trae d'impaccio.

Veggio senza occhi, et non ò lingua et grido;
et bramo di perir, et cheggio aita;
et ò in odio me stesso, et amo altrui.

Pascomi di dolor, piangendo rido;
egualmente mi spiace morte et vita:
in questo stato son, donna, per voi.

Note: Liszt's second version is erroneously listed as Sonnet 104. Liszt and Rheinberger use modernized spellings (e.g., "ò" in the first line becomes "ho" ; "et" becomes "e"). Below is the text from Liszt's first version, Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel, 1917. It is also used by Rheinberger:

Pace non trovo, e non ho da far guerra,
E temo, e spero, ed ardo, e son un ghiaccio:
E volo sopra 'l cielo, e giaccio in terra;
E nulla stringo, e [tutto 'l]1 mondo abbraccio.

Tal m'ha in priggion, che non m'apre, nè serra,
Nè per suo mi ritien, nè scioglie il laccio
E non m'ancide Amor, e non mi sferra;
Nè mi vuol vivo, nè mi trahe d'impaccio.

Veggio senz'occhi; e non ho lingua e grido;
E bramo di perir, e [cheggio]2 aita;
Ed ho in odio me stesso, ed amo altrui.

Pascomi di dolor, [piangendo rido]3,
Egualmente mi spiace morte e vita,
In questo stato son, Donna, per Voi.4
1 in Liszt's 2nd version (checked with the score published in 1922 by Breitkopf & Härtel, Leipzig), this is "tutto il"
2 in Liszt's 2nd version, this is "chiegio"
3 in Liszt's 2nd version, this is "piangendo io rido"
4 in the repetition of this line in Liszt's first version, he names the lady: "In questo stato son per Voi, O Laura, per Voi."

Gentle Reminder
This is a personal project that I began in 1995. I receive no salary for my full-time work on it, and aside from ad revenue and copyright fees, the Archive was supported financially last year by about 0.03% of our visitors.
