Three motets

Song Cycle by Ernst Křenek (1900-1991)

1. The earth abideth

Language: English

Authorship

The earth abideth for ever.
The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down,
and hasteth to his place where he arose.
All the rivers run into the sea;
yet the sea is not full;
unto the place from whence the rivers come,
thither they return again.

Input by Lidy van Noordenburg

2. To the sea in ships

Language: English

Authorship

They that go down to the sea in ships,
Who do business on great waters;
These see the works of the Lord,
And His wonders in the deep.
For He commanded and raised the stormy wind,
Which lifted up the waves thereof..
They mount up to the heaven, they go down to the depths;
Their soul melted away in their misery.
He maked the storm a calm,
So that the waves thereof are still.

3. Leviathan

Language: English

Authorship

The earth is full of thy riches.
So is this great and wide sea,
wherein are things creeping innumerable,
small and great beasts.
There go the ships:
there is that leviathan,
whom thou hast made to play therein.
